The lab · lesson 6 capstone

Does rust need water and air?

The classic investigation, side by side: three controlled reference tubes, plus one you control yourself.

How to read this

Each tube holds an identical iron nail. What differs is what each nail is exposed to. Drag the day slider — all four tubes age together — and watch which ones actually rust.

Tube A

Water + air — both present

Tube B

Boiled water + oil seal — no air

Tube C

Drying agent + air — no water

Tube D

Your experiment

Time passing

Day 7

All four nails age together. Only the ones with both water and air present will actually rust — that's the whole conclusion of this experiment, right there in front of you.
